Fortunately for us, we got the Pike Angler extraordinaire

Eric has caught the biggest brace of pike ever taken by a UK angler, fish of 41lb and 37lb from Blithfield reservoir, and will be presenting his talk on [TBA].

He hails from St. Helens, near Liverpool & most of his fishing is done in the North West of England on such waters as the Ribble, Upper Severn and Cheshire Meres.

Eric's pike fishing ambitions include the capture of a Welsh "thirty" to compliment others from England, Ireland and Scotland

Other notable captures include a record tench, caught in 1983 and a bream of 15lbs 2oz, just 4oz off the record at the time of capture. More recently, Eric has had great success with big pike, taking a number of thirty pound plus fish including no less than three over 37lbs in weight with the largest going 41lbs 8oz, caught in 2001.

As usual we will have our excellent Tatty Hash & Raffle in the interlude

The first fish-in of the 2010 season saw the 88's at Rudyard Lake getting their sea legs as it were.

With the help of Ray Perry, the Rudyard Bailiff , boats & engines for Fluffchucker, BuzzBuzz, Pikeymick, Dogman, Badcop, London, Noddy, Rick, Doon, Debs, Rick

As it was early in the season, the order of the day was for Piking on Lure or Fly.

First fish of the day on a lure was by Noddy at 6lb.

Doon had a couple at 12lb 4oz on static dead lures ???

Buzz Buzz also had a nice one at 12 lb on a wobbled dead lure!!! :-(

It was the first time I’d put in for the Menteith draw. My P.B. was an 18 lber but I hoped I could push this to a 20 at ‘Teith’. Despite best intentions, the hospitality at the Rob Roy meant we were the last ones to cast off – slap into the face of a bitter head wind throwing foot high waves. Now I own a Wheelyboat and, love it as I do, their stability designed flat bottom makes them a roller coaster in the rough. My still drunk boat partner Matt seemed oblivious to my cries to point the nose into the wind, only heeding me when he noticed I’d bunny hopped half way across the boat – despite the large wooden oar rammed through my wheelchair frame,

Without it I think I’d have been overboard before the first cast.

The day settled down to a mix of blasting wind, sleeting rain and sudden clear patches that did nothing to ease my tension as both Matt and boats round us in the day pulled a mixture of decent fish to their nets.

Around 12.30, we saw Otter Bay was clear so pulled against the reeds to get out of the wind and cast towards them. Looking through the choice of lures I ignored the exotic array of large plastics and expensive plugs and, thinking a cannibalistic pike might be tempted from the reeds, opted for a cheap Decathlon pike imitation I’d won at a PAC raffle. Matt turned to me and said, in the way fishermen do to cheer each other up; “ Who knows, Buzz, the next cast could be a thirty.’’

The no anchor policy and wind however meant before the first cast we were heading into mid water but we went with it anyway. The sonar said we were in about 8 foot of water and it was about the 3^rd cast when weed on the hooks allowed me to work out the sink rate of the lure. I remember this as the next was possibly my most considered cast of the day!

Being quadriplegic after breaking my neck in a car crash combined with the heavy boat rod I’d had to bring to troll my largest lures after being let down on a jerk bait rod at the last minute, it meant my casts were short – very short. However I slung it a good forty foot, counted it down to just above the bottom and gave it the very slow twitching retrieve of an injured fish.

Ba’ ba’ bang.

“I’m in !” I blurted at Matt as the rod arced over after the machine gun rapid knocking of the take.

“Any size ?” he naturally asked. By this time it was pulling off but was manageable. “Nah, think it’s a trout” I told him at first after the jittering bite but not wanting to raise my own hopes knowing full well, pike will often only wake up when they see the net. Several times she stripped line before we got a good look at it. Convinced I’d got my 20, I was dying to get it over the net but the screech of the clutch when it got it’s head down kept the chance of a pull out all too real.

As it finally came gliding flank up, to the boat - horror. It was too long and stocky to go in the landing net Menteith provide !

“Windsock it.” I exhorted – meaning scoop it tail first. But he couldn’t – one free hook of the contact treble had caught in the netting pinning the pikes head to the landing net head. Both were now joined leaving my new P.B. precarious in the water and what Matt saw but I didn’t know was the one hook in it’s jaw was straightening !

“Chin it ! Chin it” I pleaded. Matt did a masterful scoop and feeling it’s mass said,

“This is a thirty”

“F*** off” was my gracious reply which actually meant – ‘I hope so but I’m so excited please don’t taunt me with the thought, lets get it weighed.’ Funny how that one phrase can convey so much.

I’m not being biased, it was the most beautiful pike I’d seen. Beautiful proportions and stomach so stuffed it bulged at a right angle from it’s flank. It was like a Donkey. 31 pounds on the nail – I made Matt weigh it twice.

Concerned such a large reservoir fish should live, we rushed the photos and slipped it back: it was all a blur. Only then did I check the shots and realise we should have got one on the unhooking mat to show it’s true magnificence but that couldn’t detract from the fact – I’d snatched a beautiful and fantastic new P.B.

Matt then showed me the hook and explained what he could see when the fish was stuck. Strange but my joy was replaced by a feeling of sickness in the pit of my guts – EVEN THOUGH the fish was landed, just knowing it was so close to coming off !!!

I didn’t fish for the next half hour, I just sat, texting,,, and buzzing.
